Roles & Importance

The Board of Directors is a governing body responsible for overseeing and ensuring the success of a Head Start program. It works alongside the Policy Council and program leadership to uphold federal regulations, financial integrity, and overall program quality.

What Does the Board of Directors Do?

  1. Governance & Compliance 
    • Ensures the program follows Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS) and federal laws.
    • Approves policies, budgets, and program goals.
  2. Financial Oversight 
    • Reviews and approves the annual budget and major funding decisions.
    • Ensures responsible spending and financial accountability.
  3. Strategic Planning 
    • Sets long-term goals to improve services for children and families.
    • Monitors program effectiveness and outcomes.
  4. Program Monitoring & Quality Assurance 
    • Ensures high-quality education, family services, and health programs.
    • Conducts self-assessments and external audits to maintain program excellence.
  5. Hiring & Leadership Support 
    • Approves the selection of the Head Start Executive Director.
    • Provides guidance and oversight for leadership teams.
